Dolson and Fawcett have created a book that's enlightening, insightful and a joy to read.

- Linda Masterson, author, Living with Bears: A Practical Guide to Bear Country

Whistler is a ski town, a mountain biking mecca, an Olympic destination and a world-renowned mountain playground. It's also home to some of the most awe-inspiring animals on earth: black bears.

In A Whistler Bear Story, you'll meet the real black bears of Whistler -- Jeanie, Katie, Marissa, Fitz and Slip among others. They den near our favourite ski runs, graze in open meadows under chair lifts, munch on grass on local golf course fairways and devour berries alongside mountain bike trails. And sometimes, to their misfortune, they come into town, raid garbage bins, eat berries in people's yards, and even break into homes and restaurants looking for food.

Find out what it's like to live in a town where the animal who inspired constellations, cartoon characters and stuffed toys roams the forests nearby, and learn what the town is doing to minimize human-bear conflict and preserve our fragile coexistence.

A Whistler Bear Story features 78 stunning photographs taken by Sylvia Dolson, executive director of Get Bear Smart Society and leader in mitigating human-bear conflicts. Dolson, along with award-winning writer Katherine Fawcett, presents a fascinating historical overview of the human-bear relationship in Whistler and around the world. It's an intriguing story for locals, visitors, and bear-lovers everywhere.

Living with Bears: A Practical Guide to Bear Country
by Linda Masterson

Living with Bears is urgently recommended by the thousands of 'problem' (victimized) bears that needlessly die each year in North America. This insightful, well researched and witty book will guide and inspire humans to live in greater harmony with bears.- Steve Herrero, author of Bear Attacks: Their Causes and Avoidance, and Past President of the International Association for Bear Research and Management (IBA)

With over 900,000 black bears roaming North America today, people from Florida to British Columbia are encountering bears more often, and as a result, human-bear conflicts are on the rise. Colorado author Linda Masterson dispels myths, replaces fear with respect, and lays the foundation for improving human-black bear relations with an inside look at the fascinating world of these highly intelligent, adaptable and resourceful animals.

Bruin Dreams

Sometimes bears come to us in our dreams. They represent calm, stoic strength. Bears also indicate a time of introspection, reflection and self-observation. They symbolize the cycle of life and death and renewal. When we cross paths with the Bear in our dreams, we should set aside time to envelope ourselves in solitude and silence with a goal for rebirth and self-understanding.

Why Do Bears Play?

Few animals play more than bear cubs do, but why they play remains a mystery. They might play to practice fighting, mating, or hunting skills they will need as adults. Perhaps it's to help strengthen social bonds, reduce aggression, enhance alliances, increase tolerance, or improve group cohesion. Some bear cubs play long and hard. Others play much less. Each has its own personality. Unlike children, bears play without vocalizing. Cub play often looks like fighting, but fighting is noisy. Play is quiet and play-bites are gentle. Play often begins when a family reaches a puddle, an open field, or a soft pile of wood chips.

Aboriginal Connections

The bear held a special place in the cultures of North America's indigenous peoples. He has been revered as a healer and a teacher, a protector and a guardian, even a spirit helper. The bear has been celebrated in myths and legends and aided aboriginal peoples in their everyday lives, even appearing in their dreams and meditations. In essence, the bear has become a symbol of our intimate and inextricable relationship with nature-that we are as much animal as the bear is, depending on each other for our survival.

In Memory of Jeanie - 1990-2011

Jeanie was an extraordinary black bear who left a paw-print on the souls of all who encountered her. She will be forever remembered as an ambassador for her kind. In her willingness to accept the presence of humans, she allowed Whistlerites and international visitors a glimpse into her world. Thanks to Jeanie, we now have a richer understanding of bears, their strengths and weaknesses, their individuality and the depth of mother-love. She showed us that bears have unique emotions, quirks and personalities, and that perhaps we are more similar to bears than we imagined. Jeanie brought joy to all who were privileged to spend time in her company. She will be truly missed.

Conservation through Coexistence

The relationship between bears and humans is a complex one. We have been sharing the landscape since modern humans wandered out of Africa some 60,000 years ago. Although there were no doubt conflicts between bears and aboriginal peoples in Eurasia and North America, bears were treated with a great deal of respect.

"What is a man without the beasts?

If all the beasts were gone, men would die from great loneliness of spirit, for whatever happens to the beasts also happens to man. All things are connected. This we know. Whatever befalls the Earth befalls the sons of the Earth. Man did not weave the web of life, he is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself."

"Bears keep me humble.

They help me to keep the world in perspective and to understand where I fit on the spectrum of life. We need to preserve the wilderness and its monarchs for ourselves, and for the dreams of children. We should fight for these things as if our life depended on it, because it does."

Walk in kindness to the Earth and every living being.

Without kindness and compassion for all of Mother Nature's creatures, there can be no true joy; no internal peace, no happiness. Happiness flows from caring for all sentient beings as if they were your own family, because in essence they are. We are all connected to each other and to the Earth.

"When a pine needle falls in the forest, the eagle sees it; the deer hears it, and the bear smells it." - Indian proverb

Bears live in a rich and complex scent-defined world. They depend on their acute sense of smell for information about the world around them. Their smelling ability is extremely sensitive; seven times greater than a bloodhound's. A complex system of social messages are communicated through trails of airborne scent; scent transferred to twigs, branches and grasses; and scents left on purpose by tree rubbing or biting, as well as scat or urine marks. In the ursine world, these messages combine to become the daily newspaper.
