Tent-entering Yellowstone grizzly relocated to Billings

A troublesome grizzly bear that was frequenting Yellowstone National Park's Norris campground has been captured and relocated to Zoo Montana in Billings.

On Thursday afternoon, the campground was temporarily restricted to hard-sided units because two young grizzly bears had been seen in the campground. Initial efforts to haze or relocate the bears were unsuccessful.

The 185-pound male bear had entered an unoccupied tent, slightly damaged another and then bit a generator.  On Friday evening, the male bear was captured and, because it was not a good candidate for relocation into the wild because of his behavior, was taken to Zoo Montana.

The second bear, a young female grizzly, left the campground after the male bear was gone.

The temporary ban on tents and pop-up trailers was lifted on Sunday.

The park reminds visitors to keep food, garbage, barbecue grills and other attractants stored in hard-sided vehicles or bear-proof food storage boxes when not in use.  This helps keep bears from becoming conditioned to human foods, and helps keep park visitors and their property safe.

Bear sightings should be reported to the nearest visitor center or ranger station as soon as possible.
