Mt. Baldy's Black Bear Cub Becoming Unbearable

A bear is seen here in the parking lot of the Mt. Baldy Ice House Canyon Trail.
While other bears are off in the woods scrounging for food, one cub at the Mt. Baldy Ice House Canyon trail has discovered a secret: The hikers have food, and they're willing to share.

"The problem is that the dozens, sometimes hundreds of visitors who come here every day are feeding the bear. Each day, he comes out and begs for food, approaches people in the parking lot, pushes on cars," said Amber Uddin, who recently witnessed the bear looking for food.

"He has not broken into any vehicles yet, as he is still somewhat small -- but as he grows, it won't be so difficult," she said in an e-mail to NBCLA.

Uddin says the rangers have been warning park goers, but the message apparently hasn't stuck.

Feeding the bears is illegal in California. Penalties include a fine and possibly jail time, according to the California Department of Fish and Game.
