Becoming Bear Smart
Big problem, easy solutions
North America-wide, tens of thousands of bears are killed each year because of conflicts with humans. In British Columbia alone, an average of 824 black bears and 48 grizzlies are shot by conservation officers every year because they are considered a "problem." These preventable human-bear conflicts also result in human injury and, very occasionally, death, as well as thousands of dollars in property damage.
The good news is these very negative consequences can be avoided by bear-proofing your campsite, home, workplace, neighborhood and community.
